I wanted to play around with layering fabric and using shiny lurex scraps to show and expose surprises that are often hidden.
Item Special Note
Grant Heaps has always loved discarded objects and materials. His museum-like house is filled with numerous collections, and is open to the public most weekends as the Me, Tiny Living Room Gallery. His life-long obsession with fabric led him to work in the wardrobe department of The National Ballet of Canada. His free time is spent making wall hangings, sculptures and jewellery from the textiles he has collected.
Grant Heaps is a Canadian textile artist, living and working in Toronto. Heaps is known for constructing ornate quilts, sculptures and costumes. In the development of his work, the artist collects various materials and ephemera from clothing found on the street, to lovely fabrics scraps from his full-time job at The National Ballet of Canada. His material choices become a manifestation of his belief that "any fabric can be spun into pieces of both functional and decorative art." Heaps has participated in exhibitions in England, Germany, The Netherlands, The United States and Canada. He is currently the Assistant Wardrobe Coordinator at The National Ballet of Canada, where he has worked for 25 years.
