Item Description
Collectible Surgi doll by Madeleine LeBlanc:Burgundy silk velvet, garnet raw silk, poppy red raw silk, burgundy silk organza, polyester thread, cotton embroidery floss, beads and buttons.
Little Cryptid is a velvet, silk Surgi Doll. Ambiguous, mysterious with beaded features flashing in the light, she's a gesture of a cryptid mermaid. Found in legends, myths and lore, as well as present day "sightings", mermaids hold an ephemeral presence in culture as an embodiment of the unknown. An object, alien, and yet domestic and familiar, dolls exist in the borderless uncanny; much like the mermaid. Little Cryptid holds this tension, silly and familiar, mysterious and layered. Primarily hand sewn, with original beadwork, pattern making, construction and hand finishings.
Item Special Note
As a fibre artist and costume designer, my work consists of installations and worn garments which utilize traditional and historical tailoring techniques. With consideration of both personal and cultural histories around the devaluing of women & craft, I aim to produce work which embodies physical, sensorial and emotional labour. I studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and am currently a 4th year student of the Textiles program at OCADU.
