Item Description
Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Durango CO
Locomotive Cab Ride for Two
Durango, Colorado was founded by the Denver & Rio Grande Railway in 1879. The railroad arrived in Durango on August 5, 1881 and construction on the line to Silverton began in the fall of the same year. By July of 1882, the tracks to Silverton were completed, and the train began hauling both freight and passengers.
The line was constructed to haul silver & gold ore from Southwest Colorado's San Juan Mountains, but passengers soon realized it was the view that was truly precious.
This historic train has been in continuous operation between Durango and Silverton since 1882, carrying passengers behind vintage steam locomotives and rolling stock indigenous to the line.
The locomotive cab ride is your chance to experience part of what it takes to work the railroad line! Experience a day in the life of an engineer and fireman in the cab of a steam locomotive. Watch them feed the fire and watch the gauges for safe and efficient operation of the locomotive.
You’ll ride 3 1/2 hours one-way in the cab of an authentic K-28 or K-36 coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive pulling a regularly scheduled train. Observe first-hand what it takes to operate a historic steam locomotive. Book a morning trip from Durango to Silverton or an afternoon trip from Silverton to Durango. Ride the opposite direction in the comfort of your choice between standard train seating or riding in their motor coach on US Highway 550. Estimated round-trip train excursion time is 9 hours including layover in Silverton.
Reservations are subject to availability and blackout dates. Must be at least 18 years old. Valid until April 26, 2020.
