Doug Atchison, the writer-director of AKEELAH AND THE BEE and writer of the soon-to-be-released BRIAN BANKS, 

will read your screenplay and provide detailed notes in a 1-1/2 hour consultation session.  As a screenwriter,

Doug has won the Humanitas Prize, the NAACP Image Award, and the Academy’s Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting.

He serves on the Writers Guild's Inclusion and Equity Group, and is a much sought-after writer/director of feature motion pictures.

Doug will read 1 script and consult for 1 1/2 hours.

           Doug Atchison wrote and directed the award-winning feature film, Akeelah and the Bee, released by Lionsgate and starring Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, and Keke Palmer.  Akeelah was a commercial and critical success for which Doug was awarded the NAACP Image Award for Best Screenplay.  His script for Akeelah won a Nicholl Fellowship in Screenwriting from the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences -- and has recently been adapted into a stage play which is being performed around the country.

Doug wrote the screenplay for Brian Banks, a feature film to be released in August of 2019 by Bleecker Street and ShiVans Pictures, and for which Doug won the 2019 Humanitas Prize.  The film was directed by Tom Shadyac and stars Greg Kinnear, Aldis Hodge, and Morgan Freeman.

           Doug is currently set to direct his original screenplay, Out Spoken, a love story set in the world of basketball and spoken word poetry.  He is producing the film along with John Legend, Lou Pitt, and Laura Rister. 

Doug recently adapted the memoir The Reading Promise into a feature screenplay for Walden Media.  Doug also did the feature adaptation of the novel Calling Me Home, an interracial love story set in 1939 Kentucky, for Kamala Films.   He is currently writing the script Counterfeit for Will Smith’s company Overbook.  And he is attached to write and direct Both Ends of the Gun for producers Bob Israel and Dan Halperin.

           Previously, Doug co-wrote the screen adaptation of Rebecca Gilman’s play Spinning into Butter, starring Sarah Jessica Parker.  Doug works frequently as a “script doctor” on feature films for major studios and production companies.

Mr. Atchison has been making movies since the age of 14 and graduated from the USC School of Cinema-Television.  He sits on the Inclusion and Equity Group for the Writers Guild of America – and is an active board member for A Place Called Home, a youth center in South Los Angeles.
