Maxine Noel is Santee Oglala Sioux, born on the Birdtail Reserve in Southwestern Manitoba. She spent her early childhood on her mother’s reserve, leaving to attend a Residential School at the age of six. Maxine’s work is characterized by her use of female figures, created through flowing lines and subtle colours, which seek to represent the sensibilities and characteristics of Indigenous people. Noel is a highly acclaimed artist with a strong commitment to her culture. She is a founding Board Member of the National Aboriginal Achievement Foundation, and serves on boards and committees for the Native Earth Performing Arts, The Canadian Native Arts Foundation, the Association for Native Development in the Performing and Visual Arts, The Canadian Heritage Symposium, amongst others. Noel was the recipient of the Golden Jubilee Medal in honour of her outstanding service to Canada and was a 2019 recipient of the Order of Canada. Maxine Noel works in painting, drawing and printmaking. She signs her work IOYAN MANI, meaning “Walk Beyond” and is represented by Gallery Indigena in Stratford.
