Item Description

Swoop (Summer) (2018) by Maurie Brooks

Graphite, Colored Pencil, Wax/Oil Pastel, 11" x 11" Framed

Maurie Brooks, a visual artist who lives in the neighborhood near Corpus Christi Church and has long enjoyed Music Before 1800, now feels especially fortunate to be a new volunteer for this exceptional concert series.

Maurie received an MFA degree in painting from Hunter College, has studied at Kutztown (PA) University, Teachers College (Columbia University) and various institutions, workshops and programs in New York City and Paris.  Maurie's work has recently been on view at the popular Morningside neighborhood cafe, Kuro Kuma Espresso and Coffee.

Maurie describes her work in this way:

In a sustained practice of art making involving an exploration of materials and various means of expression, I have become increasingly focused on the complexities of color and color relationships, while incorporating drawing as a structural springboard.

The process of drawing is peculiarly personal, involving many decisions, each one building upon the previous decision without certainty of the outcome. The attempt to achieve an improbable balance of elements is challenging, often surprising and ultimately meaningful.
