This publication documents the rise of the Danish resistance and Denmark’s role as a de facto member of the Allies during five years of occupation by German troops during World War II. Published in 1963 — less than two decades after the end of the war — by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the English-language pamphlet has a freshness only possible in contemporary reviews of historic events. Its 40 pages are packed with details explaining the background of Denmark’s neutrality, the April 9, 1940, occupation and rise of the Resistance. Author Jørgen Hæstrup was a schoolmaster in Odense when he started collecting source material for a history of the Danish Resistance Movement shortly after liberation in May 1945. Hundreds of Resistance members from across the country contributed their secret files and shared information about their illegal activities. Short chapters detail the capitulation, the German promise, Danish concessions, the undeclared war, the formal conditions, rise of the Resistance movement and the fight.
