Item Description

Novelist Christina Baker Kline discovered the village of Southwest Harbor twenty years ago when she stayed at a local inn while on a book tour. With the success of her best-selling novel Orphan Train, Christina made her dream of owning a home on the “Quiet Side” of Mount Desert Island a reality – and is delighted to share this home, The Captain’s House, with you.

The house, built by a wayfaring ship captain in 1893, was recently renovated in a contemporary style. The kitchen is stocked with all the cooking utensils, appliances, plates, and glasses you could need. Pick up lobsters from the pier at the end of Clark Point Road, shuck some corn, and have a feast on the covered porch with glimpses of boats moving in and out of the harbor.

INSIDE: First Level: Large, open modern kitchen with a dining table that seats 12. Sunny, contemporary double living room with tv. Comfortable study with piano. Mud room and full bath. Second Level: 3 queen bedrooms that share a full bath. Master suite with a queen bed, full bath with claw foot tub and large walk in shower, and separate laundry room. Third Level: Newly carpeted open space with two full futons, large screen connected TV, and a twin bed.

OUTSIDE: Large, covered wraparound porch with ample seating and a table that seats 8. Back patio with grill and seating area. Renovated garage with ping-pong table, couch, and fridge. One double kayak, two single kayaks, oars, and life jackets.

The free Island Explorer bus stops right in front of the house if you prefer to avoid parking as you adventure on Mount Desert Island. Driving is also easy. Find an early evening picnic spot along the natural sea wall, just a 10-minute drive away, for a spectacular sunset and memorable campfire moment. A five-minute stroll into town brings you to basketball courts, brick-oven pizza, and ice cream, favorites of locals and visitors alike. Between Acadia National Park and the local restaurants, libraries, live music, and movies in Bar Harbor, it’s impossible to run out of things to do and taste and see!

Stay in the Captain's house will be for one week on dates mutually determined in advance with the homeowner Christina Baker Kline between September 3rd, 2019 and June 27th, 2020. The house is not available the week of Christmas 2019 or 2020.
