"Sophie Reiter's summer isn't going well, which really isn't surprising since her first two years of high school haven't been exactly sunshine and roses. Now her family's July 4th reunion looms forebodingly before her full of noise, pesky cousins, and her obnoxious brother. To top it all off Aunt Sophia, the one person who has always made these reunions enjoyable won't be there. Sadly, Aunt Sophia passed away last fall. Sophie had always been able to talk to Aunt Sophia about anything, and her bond with her great aunt had been inseverable despite the two generations that separated them. At this summer's reunion however, Sophie will discover that even death can't separate them, because Aunt Sophia has a story yet to tell from beyond the grave. A story about a catastrophic storm that forever altered the lives of Aunt Sophia's family, the citizens of Galveston, and the people of Texas."

Beautifully Written Tale of the Great Galveston Storm

January 17, 2018 by Laurie Cockerell:

"My boys loved this author's historical fiction book "General Houston's Little Spy," so we were thrilled to hear she had written another book. This book involves a young high school teen who finds and reads her aunt's journal, relating her experience as a young girl during the Great Galveston Storm of 1900. The story is intriguing, delightful, and beautifully descriptive - with more than one surprise in store for the reader. The author weaves in a lovely story with factual people and places, as well as the horrific terror of this devastating hurricane. I highly recommend this book for middle schoolers and up (adults will love it, too!)."

Please see Cara's 1st book "General Houston's Little Spy," also on our auction! A Texas Revolution Story! Excellent historical fiction for middle and high school students, and adults as well!

REVIEWS for "General Houston's Little Spy":

Jack Magnus: "Cara Skinner's young adult historical novel is a poignant and well-researched coming of age story about a young woman whose life is forever changed by the battle of the Alamo.  General Houston's Little Spy: A Texas Revolution Story is highly recommended."

"Our family loves Texas history, and nothing makes history come alive like a great historical fiction book. "General Houston's Little Spy" now sits on our shelf as one of our favorite books in this genre. The story takes the reader on a well-researched journey through the Texas Revolution, seen through the eyes of a fictional young lady who finds herself caught up in the battles and larger-than-life historic leaders of the time. The story itself is exciting and accurate, but is unique in the fact that the protagonist is a girl - rarely found in this type of book. The author tastefully handles the young woman's coming of age, along with a teenage romance and marriage. My ten year old boys enjoyed the story immensely (I'd recommend this book for upper elementary and up, due to some higher level vocabulary and intense situations), but I believe the story is also appropriate for junior high, high school students, and even adults."

I received an author signed copy of General Houston's Little Spy from Cara Skinner as a Goodreads Giveaway. Thank you so much Ms. Skinner for sharing your work with me!

This is an excellent historical fiction for Middle and High school students, and adults as well. It follows the facts of the battles for the San Antonio citizens at the Alamo in an understandable but complete manner, as well as the the growth of the other early settlements in Texas. The protagonists are young people eloping from Tennessee to Texas, and that journey is also authetic. This is a wonderful glimpse into another time that tweens and teens can understand and empathise with - please read it, parents, and share it with your kids.
