Item Description
Crafted by using Toquilla straw, scientifically known as Carludovica Palmata a straw of Ecuadorian Origin. Our “Montecristi Hats” are made from the plaited leaves of the toquilla palm, hand split into strands not much thicker than a thread to provide a very fine woven hat.
The popular belief that these hats originated in Panama goes back to the 19th century when all exports were shipped via the Isthmus of Panama before reaching all global markets. Further popularity increased when in 1904, Theodore Roosevelt, the President of the United States of America was photographed wearing an original handwoven Montecristi Hat when visiting the construction site of the Panama Canal; Henceforward adopting the incorrect name of Panama Hats.
A combination of history, tradition and skills come together with each creation that you may now enjoy and wear with pride for years to come.
