Item Description
This lovely nativity image on this ornament comes from the "Fortescue" Book of Hours, a Latin illuminated manuscript from Bruges (Belgium), ca. 1460-1470. This book of hours was destined for the English market since it includes numerous English saints in its liturgical calendar and employs the Sarum Rite used in southern England. Notes added to the calendar reveal its early owners: the births of three Fortescue family members in the 1470s are recorded. In the sixteenth century, the Catholic Fortescues became notable for rejecting the newly established Anglican Church. Adrian Fortescue was charged with high treason and eventually executed. The glass ornament reads "For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Saviour which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you, ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a Manger."
