Item Description

During bull redfish season I run a full day fishing adventure.  You have the option of fishing various locations around the Mississippi river delta. If you are staying in New Orleans we will fish the Hopedale and Delacroix areas out of Breton Sound Marina. This option puts the fishing just a short drive from the French Quarter and is an excellent choice option.  If you are looking for other opportunities we can fish Venice, river levels permitting. And, you also have the option of fishing the Western delta out of the Houma area. All of these offer excellent sight fishing opportunities. For more information give me a call and we can discuss the logistics of these destinations.

On a typical day you can expect to arrive on the fishing grounds as the sun rays start to warm the flats, where we will spend a great day poling the flats fly fishing and sight casting at giant bull redfish, monster black drum, and the cajun permit (sheepshead). Early in the season you also have an opportunity at the underrated Jack Crevalle. Pound for pound there is nothing else in the inshore waters of the Gulf of Mexico that will test your fish fighting ability or equipment like a Jack Crevalle.

Fly Fishing -8 or 9 weight rods with a weight forward floating line are ideal. I will provide all equipment, flies, leaders etc. I encourage you to bring your favorite gear and flies if you like.

Light tackle equipment is generally a solid 7’ Medium or Medium Heavy rod is appropriate. Casting or spinning gear works fine. I find that the hand tied jigs from buggs fishing lures to be ideal for sight fishing our waters.

I also offer guided fishing in the marsh complex and nearshore waters of Sabine Lake during the summer months. Sabine is located on Texas Louisiana border. During the warm season March - October there is a tremendous fishery that receives very little angling pressure and is just a short drive from Houston.

 Captain John West Bio:

Growing up as a Florida native, fishing was always my first priority from exploring local lakes for bass to fishing the flats of West Central Florida. I learned to fish the gin clear waters of the Homosassa and Chassahowitzka rivers where I acquired an affinity for sight fishing redfish.  While attending Texas A&M University I was able to further hone my skills fishing the upper Texas and Western Louisiana coast for speckled trout and Redfish. Several years ago I had the opportunity to spend some time in Central Arkansas. This is where I learned to fly fish for big browns and rainbows on the Little Red, White, and Norfork rivers. Returning to the coast I applied my newly acquired skills to sight casting for redfish with a fly rod. Several years ago I discovered the unparalleled fly fishing opportunities in the marshes of the Mississippi river delta surrounding New Orleans and South Louisiana. I knew right away that this was where I wanted to set up shop. This is how Blue Mudd Fly Fishing was born. When I’m not on the poling platform spotting big redfish, you can find me in the duck blind or at the bench building custom fly rods. Come spend a day fly fishing the pristine flats for giant bull redfish with me in Louisiana.
