About the artist...

Jon Taner was born and raised in New Jersey. His earliest studies at the Art Students League in New York City were followed by classes at the Philadelphia College of Art in Pennsylvania. He obtained his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the California College of Arts and Crafts (renamed the California College of the Arts) and his Master of Fine Arts from Syracuse University where he was awarded a Ford Foundation Grant.

Review of Jon Taner's work...

“To view an exhibition of Jon Taner’s recent (and mature) work is to enjoy an artist at his full-throated best. There is a keen sense of color and design that was assuredly honed by years of showing and teaching others about the subtleties of hue and scale – texture, balance contrast and style.. He knows his craft well and this work is ablaze with the confidence that only comes from paying ones dues and attaining artful surefootedness.

"His collage/paintings provide the viewer with a sophisticated dialog between universal elements – shapes from nature, skies and horizons, rivers and slopes – touching primal memories in all of us. One evokes a feeling of tropical bliss, another a pearlescent dream; here a human shadow, there a benign insect or small animal interloper.

"Like the Japanese woodblock masters of the 19th century (Hiroshigi or Hokusai) and the 20th century modern masters (Avery and Hockney) Taner eschews volume and shading, perspective and detail and creates pictures that combine his distinct and painterly cutouts that play against flat planes that also have exquisite brushed surfaces.”

"Best of all, a playful, decorative quality abounds here. Maybe the muse that inspired Heni Matisse in his late period paper cutout masterpieces also strolled into the Taner studio. Sure feels like it."
