James Beard, acclaimed cookbook author and teacher, was a champion of American cuisine who educated and mentored generations of professional chefs and food enthusiasts. Today the Beard Foundation continues in the same spirit, offering events and programs designed to educate, inspire, entertain and foster a deeper understanding of our culinary culture. In addition to maintaining the historic James Beard House in New York Citys Greenwich Village as a performance space for visiting chefs, the Foundation hosts conferences, tastings, lectures, and food-related art exhibits in New York City and around the country. JBF is recognized as the center of Americas culinary community.

The James Beard Foundation Awards, presented every spring at Lincoln Center, are the highest honor for culinary professionals in North America. Nominees and winners are feted at a weekend of events in New York City that has become the social and gastronomic event of the year. Past winners include Wolfgang Puck, Lifetime Achievement Award; Boulevard San Francisco, Outstanding Restaurant; and The Fry Bread House in Phoenix, Americas Classic Winner.

James Beard House Private Dinner
Enjoy a private dinner party for up to 12 people in the exclusive, elegant Peter Kump boardroom located on the top floor of the famous James Beard House.

Both established and emerging guest chefs from around the world are invited to the James Beard House to prepare special dinners throughout the year. Guest chefs and dinner themes have included:

BLACK DIAMONDS:  JBF Award Winner Tim Cushman, O Ya, Boston and NYC.  Few things say luxury better than the exclusive French black truffle, affectionately known as the “Black Diamond.” Start the New Year off in style with a truffle-centric feast at the Beard House, prepared by chefs from some of New York City’s most in-demand restaurants.

GRGICH HILLS ESTATE 40TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION:  Violet Grgich, Grgich Hills Estate, Rutherford, CA; JBF AWARD WINNER, Michael Smith, Michael Smith Restaurant, Kansas City, MO. Oenophiles, take note: we’re celebrating one of California’s most legendary wineries, Grgich Hills Estate, home to powerful Cabernets, elegant Chardonnays, and other classic Napa varietals. Join us at this special Beard House dinner, which will be prepared by esteemed chefs from across the country.

ITALIAN ICON: JBF AWARD WINNER Tony Mantuano, Spiaggia, Chicago.  Enjoy an incredible Italian-inflected spring menu crafted by JBF Award winner Tony Mantuano and his team, of the Chicago institution Spiaggia (itself a Beard Award nominee and prior home to fellow award winner Paul Bartolotta). This can’t-miss dinner will celebrate the legendary eatery’s outstanding achievement of three decades of Italian elegance.

NORTH FORK ELEGANCE: JBF AWARD WINNER Claudia Fleming & Stephan Bogardus, The North Fork Table & Inn, Southold, NY.  Farm-to-table fare meets ultimate elegance at the North Fork Table & Inn, the grande dame of Long Island wine country and labor of love created by JBF Award–winning pastry chef Claudia Fleming and her late husband, Gerry Hayden. Join us when chef Stephan Bogardus, now at the helm, crafts a decadent winter menu paired with fabulous local wines.

At Julia Child's suggestion, former James Beard student Peter Kump (founder of the Institute of Culinary Education) and friends raised the funds to make a down-payment on Beard's New York brownstone in Greenwich Village in 1987 and preserved it as a gathering place where food enthusiasts can appreciate the talents of established and emerging chefs.
