Item Description
A piece of Thoreauvian printing memorabilia! This is a stereotype plate of page 247 from the 1893 Riverside edition of WALDEN by Henry David Thoreau. It's a page from "The Bean-Field" chapter. The metal plate of type measures about 3 x 5 inches. The label on the back of the plate seems to indicate that a past collector paid just $3.00 for it. It may have been picked up at an antique shop in Cambridge, Mass. Some of the letters along the right-hand edge have been flattened by repeated use, and these nuances and bolder images are reflected when you see a copy of the actual page 247, which you can do here:
