Item Description
The Poetical Works of William Cowper, with a memoir (3 volumes in 2). Houghton, Mifflin and Company, 1854. Brown cloth, gilt letters on spines, gilt top edges. This set is ex-library and has many identification marks on the spines, on the book block edges, and as bookplates. Both volumes have heavy wear at the heads and heels of the spines. The pages are clean and only slightly aged. A complete collection of the poems of British poet William Cowper (1731-1800). Henry Thoreau quoted from one of Cowper's poems in the "Where I Lived, and What I Lived For" chapter of Walden; and it is here. This set is not the one that Thoreau read or owned. Bronson Alcott is said to have read Cowper's memoir. A poet you may not know, but the Transcendentalists did.
