Item Description

Ornamental Aesthetics: The Poetry of Attending in Thoreau, Dickinson & Whitman. By Theo Davis. Oxford University Press, 2016. Hardcover, 245 pp. Black paper boards, color illustrated dust jacket. In nearly new condition. Although Thoreau, Dickinson and Whitman were hostile to the highly-decorated rooms and poems of 19th-century-American culture, their writings are full of references to chandeliers, butterflies, diamonds, and banners that indicate a primary investment in ornamentation as a form of attending. That commitment to ornament is grounded in an understanding of poetry as an adornment to the world, and hence as a way of relating to what is present. This book offers a theory of ornamentation as a manner of marking out objects for notice, attention, and praise, and a means of exploring qualities of mental engagement other than interpretation and representation.
