BASEC (Belmont After School Enrichment Collaborative) - Send your Elementary or Chenery student to any one of BASEC's ten summer camp program weeks.

BASEC Summer Enrichment Camp blends the best elements of BASEC programming into a diverse experience of exploration, learning and fun. BASEC educators are the heart and soul of Summer Camp. Our combination of curriculum specialists, professional teachers, and high school and college-aged teaching assistants develop and implement a wonderful curriculum that builds the 21st Century skills so important to our youth.

Restriction: Valid for New Registrations Only Please!

For details, see BASEC Summer Program.

BASEC VACATION PROGRAMS ARE SCHOOL-AGE PROGRAMS OPEN TO STUDENTS IN GRADES K – 8.

To meet our licensing requirements, we can only accept students during the summer that attended school between the grades of K – 8 during the previous school year; therefore, a student entering kindergarten in September is not yet eligible for BASEC Summer Vacation Programming.

BASEC programs are intentionally designed to be developmentally-appropriate for students of different ages (e.g.: K students are automatically enrolled in their own specialized curriculum). To best engage our students, certain curriculum choices are available only to students in specific grades. Please see our curriculum choices page for more information.

CURRICULUM CHOICES

Students in grades 1 – 8 choose one curriculum per week. Choices include film making, sports, performing arts, visual arts, science and more! Outing Club is available to middle-school students.**
**PLEASE NOTE: We will make every effort to give you your first or second curriculum choice, but our first priority is making a spot in camp for every enrolling family. If your first choices are full when you enroll, we will work with you to find a good fit for your child.

Your child’s vacation week is centered on one area of interest–our choices span a broad range of subjects, from science to Shakespeare. In addition, each day includes camp-wide offerings, such as group games, collaborative projects, and even swimming during the summer! Our model is based on best practices developed by research into positive youth outcomes, and informed by our own experience providing enriching camp programming to our community for many years.

OUTING CLUB

A curriculum option for students entering grades 5 – 8, offered during February, April and select summer weeks this year. Field trips every day to Greater Boston cultural and historic sites with an emphasis on navigating public transportation and walking in the city safely.

SWIMMING

We swim at the fabulous Belmont Underwood Pool. Students entering grades 1 – 8 head to the pool for free swim each afternoon, Monday – Thursday, weather permitting. Our Aquatics Director, Cate O’Brien, manages our swim program, including instructing students on swim and pool safety, monitoring pool passes, tracking deep-end eligibility, and managing our group of BASEC lifeguards (we maintain a 25 : 1 student to BASEC lifeguard ratio at the pool, in addition to the Underwood lifeguards).

Outing Club typically returns to use the pool one or two days per week. LARP students are typically given the choice each afternoon to continue LARP programming or to go to the pool. All other BASEC campers walk to Underwood during pool time.

Students are welcome to bring a book or hang out with friends on the hardscape if they do not wish to swim. We have second snack at the Underwood playground and make a group game available. Students may opt to change into dry clothes early or remain in swimsuits for the afternoon if they wish to have a little extra swim time.

This year: Our first grade students will join the larger group for free swim in the afternoon. The decision to change from our typical swim lesson model with Belmont Recreation was influenced by three main factors: the small number of participants last summer, the walking distance to the pool, and keeping the 1st grade group together during the day. We will dedicate BASEC life guards specifically to the 1st grade group this summer, who will help these young participants get comfortable with the water utilizing intentionally-designed pool games and activities.

COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING (CIT):

Students in grades 7 and 8 are eligible to attend camp as CITs. Please contact Andrew Mountford for more information.
