Item Description
A Chinese handmade hand-painted monumental 20th century recreation of a pottery Chinese Han Entertainer reminiscent of the ancient tomb pottery sculptures crafted as votive offerings for the elite and in the afterlife. Pottery representations like this one were produced for elite tombs by ancient Chinese to serve as comforting entertainers in the after life.
Look at the great detail on this one: handsome face, floral hat, ribbons and a censer at the feet- all hand-painted in subtle red, green, and black colors. Like many large-scale Chinese terracotta culptures, the head is crafted separately and inserted into the body.
Dimensions: 31.5 inches high and 17 inches wide and 9 inches deep
History of the Han:The Han dynasty, considered to be one of China’s longest and most powerful dynasties, began in 206 BCE when Liu Bang became emperor. He established a strong centralized bureaucracy which served as a model for China’s imperial rule until the early twentieth century. The favored religion of the Han dynasty was Confucianism as it promoted a social and political framework for a centralized government with an emphasis on loyalty to the emperor. The goods left in the tombs including ancient examples of human like entertainers were made to accompany the dead and provide them-symbolically yet realistically-with some of the pleasures and familiarity that the people had experienced and enjoyed in life.
