Item Description

This is a wonderful selection of interesting, affordable great value wines.

Penley Estate Phoenix 2015, Coonawarra, Australia

Wine Advocate 91+:

Deep garnet-purple in color, 2015 Phoenix Cabernet Sauvignon is redolent of crème de cassis, licorice and dark chocolate with hints of dried mint, earth and tapenade. Medium to full-bodied, it fills the palate with generous black fruit and menthol flavors. Structured with a firm backbone, it finishes with great length. Drink 2017-2030.

Clement Saint Jean Medoc 2009, Bordeaux, France

CellarTracker 89:

60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon. Clarion call of fine dark fruit on the nose. Dry and elegant on the palate. Not as plush as some but shows finesse already with a savoury tannic aftertaste that bodes well for the longer term. Drink 2015-2022.  Julia Harding

Condado de Haza Tinto 2010, Ribera del Douro, Spain

Vinous 90:

Brilliant ruby. Smoky aromas of blackberry, cherry pit and game, with a subtle floral nuance in the background. In a wild, meaty style, offering sweet, focused cherry compote and bitter chocolate flavors and a touch of allspice. Finishes very long, with lingering smokiness, fine-grained tannins and a kick of peppery spices.

Colpetrone Sagrantino di Montefalco 2008, Umbria, Italy

Vinous 91:

The 2008 Sagrantino di Montefalco is gorgeous in this vintage. Mocha, espresso, grilled herbs, tobacco and plums are woven together in this full-bodied voluptuous wine. All the elements are very much in the right place. Although not especially varietal, the 2008 boasts considerable depth, richness and power, all in a fairly sexy style for this wine. Plums, mocha, tobacco and incense all add complexity on the finish. The 2008 is decidedly overt and flashy. It is also one of the very best values in Sagrantino.

Quinta do Crasto Douro Superior 2012, Douro, Portugal

Wine Spectator 93:

Well-crafted and suave, with refined flavors of raspberry tart, red plum and cherry pastry, matched to cardamom and savory spice notes. Silky tannins and a plush, creamy finish offer chocolate mousse accents. Drink now through 2022.

Hilary Goldschmidt Charming Creek 2014, Oakville, CA, USA

Wine & Spirits 90:

Named for Nick Goldschmidt's youngest daughter, this Cab has an amazing pedigree. Planted in 1980 Charming Creek vineyard, in the heart of Oakville was once sourced for Opus wine.  100% Cabernet Sauvignon, this wine aged 20 months in 100% French oak barrels, 25% new. This 2014 shows aromas of blackberry and black cherry. On the palate cherry, black currant, and blackberry flavors, all elegantly framed in smoky oak and fine tannins. Nuances of spice and leather linger on the finish. A seriously good wine.  Daniel Posner
