Over 100 phenomenally talented young artists participate annually in the Collin County Young Artist Competition. A visiting group of distinguished judges chooses three finalists to perform with Hector Guzman and the Plano Symphony Orchestra in the March subscription concert. Prepare to be amazed by the incredible grand-prize winners in their concerto-winning performances. David Amram’s new concerto, Partners: A Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra, highlights the genres three sets of musical partners celebrated — Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger for American folk music, Lester Young and Billie Holiday for jazz, and Machito Grillo and Celia Cruz for Afro-Cuban music. Bolero is a single movement work by the French composer Maurice Ravel. It became Ravel’s most famous work to the great surprise of the composer. The constant underlying rhythm of the drum creates the foundation as each instrument of the orchestra states the repetitive theme in an ever growing crescendo. This results in a mighty climax that always brings an audience to its feet.
