Item Description

This is a 48 x 48 inch (121.92 x 121.92 cm) Wassily Kandinsky-inspired painting on canvas created by the students in Ms. Terriann and Ms. Necia's Early Childhood Southeast classroom. Each student was given a square to create their own unique concentric circle painting for a total of 25 circles in all. Accompanying the artwork is a 37-page photo book that depicts the students' study of Kandinsky and its creation.

Excerpt from Photo Book:

"In November 2019, students began a study of Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky. Many of the Montessori works within Practical Life and Sensorial naturally supported the study. For example, the circle drawer in the geometric cabinet aides in the discrimination of size and supports exploration of shapes. Other works were created by guides and placed in the environment such as sewing work of concentric circles onto squares, puzzles and matching work of his life and art, and felt shapes for creating abstract art on the large felt board.

One work in particular (See Right) was a community art project recreating one of Kandinsky's most recognized works - Color Study: Squares and Concentric Circles. Over several weeks the students spent time painting, cutting colored squares, making circles with pushpins, glueing the circles together and finally adding their work to the larger piece.

After working with the lessons for several weeks, a community painting was created of the same work of art on a 4'X4' canvas. Each student painted their own square with concentric circles."
