Who can use Feldenkrais?
Feldenkrais can be interesting to anyone, in great health or with chronic issues.
The method is embraced by people who are curious about how to allow themselves new choices in movement because of their work so the selection of it by actors, musicians, dancers and singers is obvious. Less obvious, but equally necessary to have choice in movement are hairdressers, dental technicians, mechanics, carpenters, and office workers.
As movement is created in the nervous system the brain is involved. The brain body component of Feldenkrais is not a new thing tagged on in this era of fMRIs. It was a crucial part of the vision that the creator of the Method believed in nearly 80 years ago. This means Feldenkrais can be of interest to people who are facing challenges to movement because of a Cerebral Palsy, a stroke, MS, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's.
The different forms of Feldenkrais
Functional Integration Lessons:
This is an individualized lesson, where the practitioner primarily moves the student. The movements are almost always small, simple and never to generate even discomfort, let alone pain! done while the student is fully clothed, the lesson is relaxing for the body, and gentle on the nervous system. While the movements are easy the results can be profound... with new connections made that can be lasting.
Awareness Through Movement Through Movement Lessons and Workshops.
In these classes the practitioner guides students with voice suggesting movements that are generally simple and often uncommon. There is no pressure to succeed.
