Item Description
Applying to an art program for college? Have your portfolio reviewed by Parsons Professor John Roach!
The review is for one hour and will take place on the Parsons campus. It is open to any high school student.
For the portfolio review you should bring a curated selection of your work that includes finished projects (or documentation of them), sketches and process work.
We will have a conversation and discuss questions such as:
- What is your process when you make work?
- What subject matter are you drawn to?
- Which works do believe were successful and which ones might lead to new ideas?
Engaging with these questions will help you to refine your portfolio, consider how an admissions counsellor might view your work, and give you some ideas for how to describe your work in college essays. We can also talk about your art and design experiences in high school, your goals as an artist or designer, your vision of the future, and possible pathways through the world of college art and design programs.
John is a working artist who currently serves as the Chair of the Committee on Undergraduate Education at Parsons. He has served as juror for Scholastic Art and Writing Awards and as a reviewer for National Portfolio Day. John is the former Director of the First Year at Parsons and oversaw the redesign and implementation of the new Parsons curriculum which rolled out in 2013. He is also an advisor to ISDI (Indian School for Design and Innovation in Mumbai). In his various roles at Parsons John works regularly with admissions. He has taught in First Year, Fine Arts, Integrated Design, Transdisciplinary Design, Design and Technology and Summer Intensive Studies. His own practice includes painting, drawing, glass, sound and installation. He is a huge fan of collaboration and an all around nice fellow.
