Item Description

"Stain" Teacup and Saucer Designed by Bethan Laura Wood

Tea can stain china, and your teeth, over time. But with "Stain" cups, age is beauty. Artist Bethan Laura Wood created the ingenious, beautiful stain tea cup. The interior of the cup is treated so that it stains. It sounds like an odd thing to want your cup to do, doesn’t it? But it is treated so it stains in predetermined areas. The more you use the cup, the more the hidden pattern is revealed. According to Wood, “they will build up an individual pattern dependent on the user’s personal way of drinking tea.” These cups are hand treated and made of high quality bone china. It takes some doing to buy one of these fun cups: you would have to contact Bethan Laura Wood via her website to order.

Bethan Laura Wood obtained a MA in Design Products at the Royal College of Art, under the tuition of Jurgen Bey and Martino Gamper. Since graduating in 2009, Bethan has built a multidisciplinary practice characterized by material investigation, artisan collaboration, and a passion for colour and detail.

Bethan enjoys exploring the relationships we make with objects in our everyday lives, and questions how they can become cultural conduits. She is interested in critical approaches to achieving sustainability in a mass consumption, production-driven context.

Alongside working closely with Nilufar Gallery since 2011 for Limited Edition and one off works, Bethan has been commissioned by a variety of international partners to create works and installations including Perrier Jouët, Moroso, Valextra, Bitossi Ceramiche, Tory Burch, cc-tapis, Tolix, Rosenthal and Hermés. Her work has been exhibited in institutions such as V&A, Swiss Institute New York, Daelim Museum and MOT, Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, and is part of the permanent collections of the Wellcome Collection and Abet Laminate Museum.
