Item Description

Do you have the desire to get away from the crowds but don’t have the skills to be safe? Are you afraid of getting lost in nature? Are you over-reliant on your GPS and want to improve your navigation skills? Then this course is for you!

This course is led by Molly Arévalo, a volunteer instructor with the Sierra Club’s Wilderness Travel Course, through which she has led many backcountry, off-trail trips in the desert and the mountains. She is an “E-Rated” navigator and serves as an examiner for Sierra Club leadership candidates who wish to lead off-trail backpacking courses.

The proposed date for this outing is May 3rd, 2020.

The outing is for 4-6 people and would begin by meeting over coffee in Altadena to learn the basics of topographic maps and compass use. Participants should provide their own compasses, ideally one with a sighting mirror and adjustable declination, and the instructor will provide maps. They will then hike to Echo Mountain (~6 miles RT, 1730’ elevation gain), practicing taking bearings and identifying terrain features throughout. Additional information will be given to auction winners. This outing will take four to six hours, so if you have small children, you may need to get a sitter.
