Item Description

Title: Rhapsody in Blue

Mrs. Lewis' classroom art piece is inspired by the artists Wassily Kandinsky, Sonia Delaunay and Joan Miro. Kandinsky is generally credited as the pioneer of abstract art. He felt that he could express feelings and music through colors and shapes in his paintings. He believed a painting did not need a particular subject, but that shapes and colors alone could be art. Sonia Delaunay used bold colors and geometric shapes in her paintings. She wedded color and form to achieve visual intensity on the surface of the canvases she painted. Joan Miro once said, “I try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music.

Together, Mrs. Lewis and the students of Room 205 used the influence of Kandinsky, Sonia Delaunay and Miro to compose their own visual “Rhapsody” to reflect the daily function, flow and creativity of their classroom. The students created their own organic shapes, which were then transferred to a canvas. The students painted the shapes using different colors and styles. The shapes symbolize each student's mark on the world - both individually and communally. The students then filled in the space surrounding the various shapes with color blocks of different shades of blue. Whether it is within the shapes themselves, or through the color blocks of blue, each student's artwork is connected to another student's artwork in some way. The end result celebrates each student's unique approach and style while also symbolizing inclusion of each student's individuality.

The community that is Room 205 is reflected on the canvas. With Mrs. Lewis' guidance, the students, represented by various shapes and colors, each unique in their own right, come together in one classroom, on one canvas. Though we all have differences and characteristics that make us distinct from one another, we are connected and come together as one.
