Item Description

Run Like the Wind running club after school session for one student (approx. ten weeks) to John Hay.

This class is great for students who have an interest in running, learning more about running, or are just excited to get out and burn off some steam after school. Running games are integrated as well and the program intends to physically and mentally prepare students for a spring 5K run.

The instructor, Cher Edwards, is a Magnolia mom of two, a past school counselor and current educator at Seattle Pacific University. When asked about her interest in facilitating the Run Like the Wind afterschool program she shared, “I know the importance of integrating physical activity as part of a wellness model of supporting student academic and social/emotional health”. In addition to getting great exercise and having fun, runners talk about making good choices about food and activities, learn stretching/warm up exercises, running techniques, and fun running activities and games.

The program also serves as a platform to practice self-discipline and social skills. As part of the club, runners receive nutritious (most of the time – some treats!) snacks, an athletic fabric Run Like the Wind running shirt, a running charm necklace and weekly tokens for running miles, eating healthy, staying hydrated while running, showing effort and many parents favorite – the “respectful runner” award and charm for a session-long behavior that the parents and runner agree to and is earned at home with award presentation as part of the running club.

Historically this club has culminated with an optional 5K – which is always a hit with the runners and families! Lawton’s Run Like the Wind runners have participated in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Awareness Run, The Top Pot Donut Greenlake 5K, the Jingle Bell Run and most recently, Run with the Beavers – a fundraising event for Ballard High School. If you have an active student or student who enjoys physical activity – this is the club for you! Parents have also shared this is a fantastic club for students who prefer to self-regulate their social interaction as the running activities allow students to choose to run solo or with a friend or group.
