RuPaul’s Drag Race has become an international phenomenon. With 11 seasons aired (and a 12th coming next month), four seasons of All Stars, iterations in Thailand, the UK and soon Canada, their global Werk the World tour production, and annual DragCons taking place in Los Angeles, New York and London, the show is practically inescapable. But now, Drag Race brought their magic to Sin City, as the queens take over the Las Vegas Strip.
RuPaul’s Drag Race Live, which officially kicked off at Flamingo Las Vegas, is like nothing audiences have seen from the franchise. From off-the-cuff comedy, to eye-popping costumes, mesmerizing lights and projections, as well as original music and choreography, the show has it all.
While this one-of-a-kind production incorporates everything that you’d expect to see from Drag Race, the format of the live production is different than fans may expect. The show operates like an insular episode of Drag Race, with each of the queens portraying a character competing for the crown. At the premiere, the cast of queens (Kameron Michaels, Vanessa “Vanjie” Mateo, Naomi Smalls, Yvie Oddly, Derrick Berry and Asia O'Hara acting as host) competed in a dancing mini-challenge and a "Diva Drag Vegas" maxi-challenge, where they whipped out their best drag numbers to wow the crowd.
At the end of the show, the audience gets to directly participate as judges: The two top queens lip sync for the crown, with the audience using their applause to choose the winner.
