Sara VanDerBeek is a contemporary American artist known for her photographs of sculptural assemblage. Her work explores the spatial relationships between photography, viewer, and object through the camera's ability to construct and manipulate space. Considered an heir to Pictures Generation artists like Laurie Simmons, VanDerBeek states: "I have always been interested in how photography affects the reading of scale, time, and place. It can be disorienting or confusing to encounter a photograph of something, but it can also usefully enlighten some little-perceived aspect of real-life experience." VanDerBeek has received significant acclaim for her photography, through exhibitions like "New Photography 2009" at The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2010. Currently living in New York, NY, VanDerBeek has shown with Metro Pictures, and her works are in the collections of the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and the Guggenheim in New York, among others.
