Item Description
Autographed copy of Taking Sides with the Sun: Landscape Photographer Herbert W. Gleason
Author: Dale R. Schwie, former Thoreau Society Board Member and Life Member of the Thoreau Society
This is the first biography of landscape photographer, Herbert W. Gleason (1855-1937) who abandoned a career as a Congregational minister in midlife and went on to become one of the most distinguished landscape photographers of his age. At the core of his achievement lies a series of photographs taken over a period of nearly forty years that document the places Henry David Thoreau visited and referred to in his voluminous writings. Many of these photographs, commonly referred to as Gleason’s Thoreau Country images, were coupled with pertinent texts
from Thoreau’s work and published by the Houghton Mifflin Company in the twenty-volume 1906 edition of The Writings of Thoreau. Geason's own book, Through the Year with Thoreau was published in 1917, the centennial of Thoreau's birth.
