Item Description

Destined to take a place of honor on your shelves or desk, this pair of bronze-finished bookends expertly captures the grandeur and magnificence of Buddy, the world's first Seeing Eye dog. Each bookend features the head of Buddy with a rectangle base that reads, ""BUDDY"" on the front and inscribed with "The Original Seeing Eye Dog for the Blind" on the back.

These bookends are a heavy cast gray metal with beautiful verdigris patina. Measures 7” high x 5-1/2” wide x 6” deep. Each bookend weighs approximately 2.5 lbs. Designed by McClelland Barclay and cast by Dodge, Inc. Circa 1935

Item Special Note

About the artist: McClelland Barclay (1891-1943) was one of the best known and successful American artists of the first half of the twentieth century. Born in St. Louis, he was a student of H.C. Ives, George Bridgman and Thomas Fogarty. Barclay was a painter, an illustrator, a sculptor and a jewelry designer. His illustrations appeared on the covers of many national magazines, as well as on Naval posters for the first and second World Wars. His McClelland Barclay Art Company (1930s) produced numerous small household items, including, of course, bookends. Barclay died in action as a naval officer in the second World War, but his art lives on. Online exhibits of his art can be viewed at The Naval History and Heritage Command, Navy Yard, Washington DC and National Museum of American Illustration, Newport RI.

Condition: Good used condition. No visible damage.

This is a set of two identical sculptures.
