Item Description

This basket from the families in 701 includes a mix of books about kid/teen activism and then some useful tools like foam boards, sharpies, and duct tape (for their next protest!). Books include: Know Your Rights: A Modern Kids Guide to the American Constitution by Laura Barcella; How I Resist: Activism and Hope for a New Generation edited by Maureen Johnson; No One is too Small to Make a Difference by Greta Thunberg; You Are Mighty: A Guide To Changing the World by Caroline Paul; Nevertheless We Persisted: 48 Voices of Defiance, Strength and Courage; Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson (adapted for young adults). For adults: Jazz and Justice: Racism and the Political Economy of the Music. Also a book by Wynton Marsalis for kids and adults called To a Young Jazz Musician: Letters from the Road. We focus on 2 jazz masterpieces that played a big role in the civil rights protest movement, so we include 2 CDs that include Billie Holidays Strange Fruit, and Charles Mingus Original Faubus Fables, and a book/essay describing their importance.
