Item Description
Beautrice Beutel is a NYC based actress and artist. Although her formal training is in acting, Beatrice wants to pursue visual arts as a self taught painter and animator. Beatrice was very excited for this opportunity to paint pictures for a Jerwish auction that explore her own Jewish heritage. Her grandfather is a Holocaust survivor, so she was inspired by three pictures of Jewish children before WWII. Beatrice wants to bring color and life back to these black and white photos to respect and remember the past ansd acknowledge it's continued importance. You can learn a bit more and contact Beatrice through her website, beatricebeutel.com.
This painting is based off a photograph from NYC in 1890 by Jacob Riis. The girl and the baby are presumably the children of Jewish immigrants. The Lower East Side was traditionally the neighborhood of Jewish immigrants, and it is very close to where Beatrice lives now.
