A little about Kalpana … This beautiful elephant was subjected to decades of abuse and neglect; chained for hours at a stretch, subjected to cruel training methods and living in constant fear of being beaten by a bullhook. We found Kalpana tied to a tree with no food or water, abandoned by her owner when escalating medical issues left her unable to work long hours.
Kalpana has absolutely no vision in one eye, and immediately befriended Holly, who is completely blind. Recently, she was introduced to Karma, another blind elephant. Among the three of them, they have one good eye. Kalpana has taken on the role of being their guide and leads them to the pool, the field, or the river.
Kalpana has shown huge improvement both emotionally and physically. Companionship plays an important role in healing, especially for elephants who are social animals and form strong bonds in their herds.
