Item Description

Curly Flat Wines Pinot Noir 2017 Magnum

Kindly donated by Curly Flat Vineyard

Tasting Note Bouquet:

Fresh violets & dried lavender entwine with strawberry and black cherry to form a fresh, fragrant peak. Aromas of leather, fresh earth and autumnal undergrowth merge with coniferous notes, oak spice & black pepper all providing a complex savoury base. Palate: Luminous yet mouth-filling red threaded black fruits meet fine suede-like tannin that’s ushered along by an undercurrent of cooling acidity. Fine mineral length meets with an ethereal epilogue of persisting palate perfume. Cellaring: Drinking well now with the best to come over 10+ years.

Season notes:

“The power of the 2014s combined with the fragrance and detail of the 2015s” is how Curly Flat winemaker Matt Harrop has described our 2017 vintage. A year of moderates. Not a day over 40˚C, warm days extending into March coupled with cool nights giving us slow, steady (perfect) ripening conditions. This season without extremes allowed great balance, elegance and aromatics in our wines. Our 2017 wines show excellent concentration and the texture and tension to age gracefully for years.

Reviews:

Entices immediately with heady aromas: all spiced cherries, pips, warm earth, autumnal leaves and borage. But the palate is the clincher. Glossy yet fine tannins, graceful, lithe and long. Lovely wine. 96 points James Halliday, Wine Companion This is a wine of both power and finesse. There is depth of fruit and texture that beguiles the vintage yet the wine retains the acidity and delicate lines of tannin that has made 2017 such a beguiling year… A wine that will impress now and well into the future. 96 points Patrick Eckel, winereviewer.com.au The main thing I like here, is that there’s an earthy/mineral thing going on that sets it apart from the pack. Cherry, strawberry, spice, mint, autumnal, yet still bright with cranberry acidity, wonderful graphite tannin, a coolness and composure without compromising this sort of salt-of-the-earth integrity thingy. Finish is pure and mineral infused, with insistent tannin pushing it long. 95+ points Gary Walsh, The Wine Front In line, length and sheer jaw-dropping beauty, this is one of the greatest Curly Flats yet. 95 points Tyson Stelzer, Wine Business Monthly A gorgeous Pinot Noir. There's so much here to adore and admire… A myriad of aromas cascade from the glass. Autumn leaves, mushroom compost, plums and dark cherries. A little more time reveals some blackcurrant leaf and a faint whiff of pine needle… Silky smooth through the mouth with wonderful depth of fruit, a lovely chew of tannin and fine spices wave you off at the door. Gorgeous indeed. 95 points Steve Leszczinski, Q Wine Tightly-bound with dark fruit and lemony acidity. The palate has good underlying savouriness, as well as accents of dried mulberry, vanilla bean, star anise and dark plum. 93 points Toni Paterson, The Real Review
