Item Description
This hand-carved, hand-pulled, Moku Hanga woodblock print of "Buddha with Humpback Whales" was made and painted by artist Faith Stone.
Shayamuni is the historical Buddha who represents wisdom and compassion. Ms. Stone shows him here in a Hawaiian setting attended by a humpback whale and her calf. She says, "I love to bring Buddhist and Hindu iconography into contemporary Western settings. I particularly like to put them in Colorado and Hawaii where I spend most of my time. Hualali mountain is in the background."
Ms. Stone paints contemporary Buddhist and Hindu art. She finds the joy in painting Buddhas is creating the space and environment for the deity to reside. "The idea is that once the painting is completed, the deity moves in. The painting no longer belongs to the artist. It is the home of a Buddha." Ms. Stone is also author of Drawing Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. "I want everyone to paint Buddhas, it's the best!"
