Artist's Statement

Dan Cooper, Community Artist

I LOVE TO PAINT!

I am passionate about it, and can’t wait to get into the studio each day. For 30-40 hours a week, I am absorbed in mixing colors, overlapping brushstrokes, discovering subtle interrelations, handcrafting an object of beauty and contemplation in a high-tech world. It’s all a constantly engaging source of wonder to me, with new beginnings, new challenges, new reasons for humility.

I maintain a naïve belief that art really can change the world by offering us ways to understand and communicate complex things about life that cannot be said in words.

I’d call myself a modern realist with an appreciation for abstract art. My painting process is a creative journey through ever-closer approximations in paint of a vision that has captured my imagination. Each image depicts a specific place and time, but I feel somehow that the most important aspects of my art are invisible.

Over time I find myself expressing deeper levels of meaning through my work. Each painting is in some sense a self-portrait, though I believe personality is only the surface layer of a vast world of being. Through painting, I aspire to combine discipline with spontaneity, to fuse pattern and emotion, to allow my eye, mind, heart, and hand to become instruments of the universe, portraying a reality beyond appearances.
