“Healing the Heart”

This is the same rod used in PHWFF Programs. This 4-piece, 9-foot combo was built by Todd Radek who is a Veteran, a Police Officer and Volunteer in the North Chicago Program. “Healing the Heart” pays homage to The Purple Heart which is awarded to those wounded in combat. The combo includes rod, large arbor reel, weight forward fly line and a case.

Handcrafted and dedicated to all those who were wounded, for all those whose hearts have healed, and to all those whose hearts are still healing.

 Some wear the Heart proudly. Some wear their Heart with reservation, simply displayed amongst their other medals and ribbons to let the casual observer discover. Other choose not to wear it. Perhaps because they feel undeserving, or the horror of its reception awakens too much pain.

The ones who have received the Heart are the ones we know that have been injured in combat.

Countless others have also been wounded but their wounds are not visible. Their wounds are silent, and mostly invisible.

Invisible except for the night sweats. A sudden outburst. A stare of 1,000 yards. A panicked expression in a crowd. The curtains and shades that never open.

Water. Essential for life. One who struggles to hear, listens to the gentle sound of flowing water over the rocks…..

and the Heart begins to Heal.

Thread. Feathers. A hook. Created by hands. A fly is born…..

and the Heart begins to Heal.

A rod. A cast. A rise. A strike. Arms that once threw a baseball, but no longer can, fights a fish….. and the Heart begins to Heal.

A fish. One who struggles to see admires the bright colors and blended hues…..

A smile. A handshake. A high five…..
