Item Description
This beret by North House Instructor Larry Schmitt was made using naturally colored handspun Shetland wool, alpaca, and mohair.
As a child, Larry learned many textile techniques from his parents, including nålbinding. Since the early 1980s, he has been teaching and researching nålbinding and has written a number of instructional manuals. These workbooks are some of the few resources on nålbinding in English. Larry has taught and exhibited nålbinding throughout the country and is recognized internationally for his efforts to name and describe the components of nålbinding. His research is documented in Ulrike Claßen-Büttner’s study “Nadelbunden,” and elsewhere. Larry is also interested in traditional, easy-to-complete textile projects that utilize tools and equipment that are portable and easy to obtain or construct. His classes at North House reflect his continuing interest in traditional textile crafts.
