Item Special Note
Born in Chicago, John Herendeen (1931-2000) grew up surrounded by a rich array of innovative architectural structures He earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois and became a certified architect in 1961. Back in Chicago, he worked for several major firms over a period of 25 years. Apart from architecture, Herendeen started painting buldings in 1977. However, quite unlike the modern structures he had been building, he sought to portray old homes and farmlands. He traveled throughout the United States finding unique buildings with character, such as intricate Victorian homes from the Midwest or old southern mansions.
His paintings exude the mysterious quality of time gone by, as he showed the structures as they were in their original glory, without modern modifications. And in contrast to these historical structures, he also enjoyed painting the secretive shelters of the old west. In each of his paintings Herendeen captures the character of the scene created by a unique blending of a man made structure with its natural surroundings.
Herendeen's paintings have won numerous awards and are collected privately and corporately around the world.
