Item Description

Lot 1 of 2.  Three bottles of wine from the iconic winemaker, Rod Berglund.

Joseph Swan wines have been an iconic staple in the Russian River Valley for over 50 years. The winemaking style has always played homage to terroir and uses traditional methods of winemaking such as open top fermentation, manual punch downs, and native yeast. Their wines are known for their exceptional ability to age well.

This lot includes one bottle each of:

2014 Chardonnay, Hawk Hill Vineyard

2013 Pinot Noir, Trenton Estate Vineyard

2013 Zinfandel, Bastoni Vineyard

Hawk Hill 2014 Chardonnay

Aromas of citrus blossom, crushed oyster shell and honeysuckle.  In the mouth, it has vibrant acidity.  There is a nervous energy that allows it to the dance between leanness and richness.  A great food wine, but happy to drink it only accompanied by a second glass.

2013 Bastoni Zinfandel

Located in what I refer to as the Riebli Valley, just a few miles east of Highway 101, this sight has been farmed by the Bastoni family since 1906. Martha Bastoni and her husband, Russ Messanna currently farm it. Although the old vines are gone, the replants are going strong and are meticulously cared for. And even though we have only been making wine from this vineyard for three years, it exhibits what I have come to view as a classic Bastoni nose of deep blue tinged fruit, like a cross between boysenberries and blueberries.  Contrasting to Russian River Valley, the east side of the valley gives the wine more of a white pepper, red fruit, and juniper berry. Good but not overwhelming tannin or acidity, and medium to full body.

And here's Critical Acclaim for Trenton Estate Pinot

The 2013 Pinot Noir Trenton Estate is beautiful on all accounts. Sporting a slightly evolved yet still healthy ruby color, it gives up a smorgasbord of sassafras, mint, bay leaf, forest floor, and chocolate that gains depth and richness with time in the glass. Beautifully textured, medium to full-bodied, with a seamless, elegant style that's a joy to drink, it will probably continue evolving gracefully for another decade, yet it's showing incredibly well today. Readers looking for a complex, nuanced Pinot Noir will love this.

Earth and black tea meet forest floor notes in this dark, brooding and powerfully full-bodied wine. A touch of reduction accentuates the profuse oak, recalling clove and cardamom, as tingling acidity vies for attention and integration.
