Item Description
This original oil painting by Kateri Garcia of the Buddha Shakyamuni with his hands in the earth-touching mudra, depicts the moment when the Buddha attained enlightenment underneath the bodhi tree. He is said to have used this gesture to summon the earth to bear witness to his victory over the seductive forces of illusion. The ethereal quality of the painting is a reminder of the empty nature of all phenomena, and the focus on the buddha's hands reinforces the need to reject the seductive forces of ignorance.
Kateri Garcia is a photographer and painter currently living in Arlington, Virginia. She is a native New Mexican who has lived in a number of cities throughout North and South America. She loves to travel and draws inspiration from experiencing new places and meeting new people. She is also a practicing Buddhist who believes in mindfulness and living in the present.
