1923 Bird Guide by Frank M. Chapman: What Bird is That?
This is an original 1923 bird book by Frank Chapman, one of the founding members of New Jersey Audubon. Titled WHAT BIRD IS THAT?, it is a “Pocket Museum of the Land Birds of the Eastern United States – Arranged according to Season. 144 page hardbound book that measures 5.1” x 7.5”. Published by D. Appleton and Company in 1923, copyrighted 1920. Contains an introduction, discussion of birds and seasons, eight color plates of 301 bird illustrations and black-and-white vignettes by Edmund J. Sawyer, and species accounts for all the birds of the Eastern US. A classic piece of birding history!
Original 1950 Cape May County Bird Checklist
This is an original annotated checklist from 1950 (70 years old!) for Cape May County. 40 page booklet that measures 3.75” x 7.5”. Compiled by noted ornithologist Ernest Choate and published by the Cape May Geographic Society. Contains a county map/habitat key and bar graph and habitat for 292 species with status presented by month throughout the year. Previous owner’s name/address stamped on top and a library code on bottom of the front page. A classic piece of Cape May birding history!
Original 1972 Birds of Brigantine Checklist
This is an original annotated checklist from 1972 (almost 50 years old!) for Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge – now Edwin B. Forsyth NWR. Foldout checklist on cardstock that measures 6.5” x 13”. Published by the US Dept. of Interior, Fish & Wildlife Service. Has a nice vignette of birders on the front. Contains 270 species with status presented for spring, summer, fall, winter. A classic piece of NJ birding history!
