Item Description

From the personal collection of Alison C. Vesely, this vintage Riviera Ware is amongst the rarest of the 30's collectibles.

Designed by Frederick Rhead and made from 1936-1945, the Riviera pattern was the first pottery line in the solid color glazes offered by the Homer Laughlin Pottery Company. Riviera pre-dates the better-known Fiesta Ware by a few years.

This pattern is a rounded square with a decidedly Art Deco, almost architectural, flair to it. All pieces are quite pleasing to the eye, unencumbered with decals or decoration of any kind other than shape and color.

Because Riviera is a lighter weight pottery than Fiesta, the pieces tended to chip on the underside. They were available originally in red, bright yellow, original green, and mauve (blue). None was marked or stamped. Riviera was only produced for about 10 years, and is considerably less common than Fiesta or even Harlequin patterns.
