Item Description

Bayeux Tapestry book, fold-out and postcards One of the most amazing products of the Middle Ages is the Bayeux Tapestry. So impressed was I that I considered moving to Bayeux and becoming a tourist guide at the museum.

The cloth is linen, the threads wool. It tells the story of William the Conqueror’s conquest of England, beginning in 1064. Scholars have found a huge amount of information from the tapestry, including portrayals of tools and weapons they didn’t think had been invented yet. The book, published by Prestel (famous for their art books), is in color and describes how the tapestry was made and what it represents for us today. For anyone interested in history, France and England, Middle Ages, or tapestry, this is a real find.

The fold-out book portrays the entire tapestry. Each of the pages is 11 1/2” x 4 3/8”, all 58 of them. Yes, that means it is more than 50 feet long when unfolded. Indeed, I didn’t have enough room in my apartment to fold it out the whole way. The original tapestry is roughly 230 feet long and twenty inches high. So this is slightly larger than a one-fifth scale of the original. Amazing. How do they even print something like this? Thirty-two postcards also show close-ups of many of the tapestry images. The style is quite striking. The characters are not meant to be realistic, they are meant to represent what is being said. Are you a teacher? What a great lesson this would make for a classroom.
