Item Description
Vintage large green glass decanter with tooled leather at the base and on the two stoppers. It is hand-blown with two small internal bubbles in the base. Measures 13 inches high (14-1/2 with stopper) and 6-1/2 inches wide, in excellent condition.
Initially created in Catalonia, Spain, the porron was intended to share wine with friends, without sharing germs or using glasses. The internal bulb keeps wine cool in the hottest weather. The spout tapers to a small opening, so the wine has minimal contact with the air. To use, fill the bulb with ice, and the porron with wine.
Porron drinking can be learned in four easy steps. (1) Fill the porron with water. (Your shirt will thank you.) (2) Start low. Holding the porron comfortably at the neck, raise the nozzle close to your open mouth. As a stream starts to flow from the porron, begin to tilt your head back, keeping the spout from touching your mouth. (3) Extend high. Slowly extend your arm, creating a long, arched stream into your mouth. (4) Finish low. Lower your arm back to your starting position so that the porron is near your mouth and the beverage has stopped flowing. (Of course, there are countless instructional videos on-line.)
After mastering the pour with water, move on to wine, and prepare to amaze and entertain your friends.
