Item Description

This US Flag displayed in a wooden case has special meaning in so many ways. Donated to CfR by Western MT 2018 past participant, Missy Martin, the flag was carried aboard combat missions on a C-130 flown by Missy.  The accompanying certificate is signed by all the crew members and details the countries where the flag was flown.  The custom patch was designed and worn by Missy during all her combat missions.  Note Missy's CfR hat which she wears while flying now!

Missy Spoke at the 6th annual Cast One for Hope in 2018 to a packed house with not a dry eye in the crowd when she began sharing her story.

Missy was diagnosed with breast cancer in April 2018 when she was 34 years old.  She had recently fulfilled her lifetime dream of becoming a C-130 pilot for the MT Air National Guard and had been home from training for only 3 weeks when she was diagnosed. Missy underwent a year of chemo, a month of radiation and 3 surgeries over the course of a year.  She lost her medical clearance to fly for the Guard and didn't know if she would every fly again.

CfR was instrumental in helping her cope with the difficulties that come with a cancer diagnosis and provided her with a beacon of hope.  She attended the Western Montana retreat in 2018.   Missy applied for a waiver to get her flight status back the day she completed her last chemo infusion and was able to return to fly the C-130 in late 2019.   She volunteered to deploy in April 2020 and departed the US for the Middle East on the two year anniversary of her diagnosis.

Missy's diagnosis and battle with breast cancer was still very fresh during her deployment and she wanted to do something for CfR which had helped her so much.  She had the patch made and flew the US Flag on two of her combat missions.  One being an aeromedical flight transporting sick and wounded patients from forward deployed locations back to main bases.  Her blue Casting for Recovery hat has become her flying hat, always attracting questions.

"I hope this flag can bring CfR even a fraction of the help that the organization has given me".
