Item Description
This signed and numbered (104) framed print recalls Civil War days in Franklin. Solid wood frame with gold corners.
The Civil War Battle of Franklin (TN) was one of the bloodiest five hours of the War Between the States. A large portion of the fighting took place on the Farm of Fountain Branch Carter. His house became the high-water mark of the Confederates, under the command of General John Bell Hood, as they breached the Federal Breastworks, under the command of General John M. Schofield. The battle started about 4 PM and lasted until 9 PM. Nearly 10,000 casualties took place that night. Four Confederate generals (including General Patrick Cleburne) would be found dead and two more would die soon after as a result of their mortal wounds. The artwork of Marvin Stalnaker entitled " Cleburne at the Cotton Gin " depicts the intense fighting that took place near the Carter's Cotton Gin on November 30, 1864. Although the original cotton gin burned down sometime in the 1890's, today the property where it once stood has been purchased by a local Civil War Preservation group and they have plans to build a replica of the gin. Also near the site where General Cleburne fell stands a small memorial dedicated by the City of Franklin.
