Item Description

Plant a mangrove tree in this grassroots community project restoring the coastline in Pemba, Zanzibar.

Mangrove forests are an environmental superpower. Their dense roots shelter coastlines through storm protection and shore stabilization, and prevent soil erosion and flooding. Up to 3/4 of all tropical fish are born in these nutrient rich habitats, and they protect coral reefs from sedimentation and by filtering out toxins at the shore. Mangroves also sequester massive amounts of carbon, at higher rates than terrestrial forests.

The world has lost over half of mangrove forests to coastal development, aquaculture and deforestation. This is no exception in Zanzibar. Members of the Zanzibar-Canadian Diaspora Association (ZACADIA) have rallied together with theh community at home in Pemba to restore the mangroves that sustain their livelihoods and protect our environment.

MANGROVES: We and our coastal lands depend on them, the ocean depends on them, and our environment & ecosystems depend on them.
